Schwarzbein Diet
The Schwarzbein Principle was written by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, an endocrinologist who learned the principles in question while practicing at a diabetes clinic. She observed first-hand what happened when patients were given low-fat, high-carb diets. She noticed that many heart patients had been put on this kind of a diet after bypass surgery, and later developed Type 2 diabetes. Setting out to find out why, she asked her patients to monitor their glucose levels before and after each meal. She noticed a correlation between the types of carbohydrate consumed and spikes in insulin levels. Schwarzbein believes that this insulin resistance causes weight gain and other conditions, such as arthritis.
The “healing phase” of the diet includes a minimal carb intake. The only carbohydrates that are acceptable are ones from leafy greens. This phase is intended to “heal” your metabolism, after which you may slowly introduce whole grains and fruit back into your diet. After losing the amount of weight you desire, you need to take steps to maintain your weight loss. If you notice that you begin gaining weight again, you should cut back on the carbs you have added to your diet. Some people find they return to the “healing” program several times in order to lose weight effectively.
In her second book, Dr. Schwarzbein stresses that the healing program is not for long-term use and not for people who already have a healthy metabolism. She asks people to use common sense in their dieting and to consume fruits and whole grains in moderation. Schwarzbein prefers not to be considered as part of the “extreme low-carb” diet craze.
