Dr. Michael D. Ozner’s tired of the low-carb diet phenomenon. Dr. Ozner asserts that there have been no long-term studies showing that a low-carb diet is either safe or effective. Therefore, the Miami-based cardiologist took a cue from a region that has had a very low incidence of heart disease: the Mediterranean.
The Miami Mediterranean Diet features a weight loss plan grounded in the diet that has kept Italians and Greeks healthy for centuries. Heavy on fruits and vegetables, fish, whole grains, legumes, olive oil and other monounsaturates, and light on red meat, the plan is geared to satisfy the appetite without making dieters feel deprived. His book contains almost two hundred recipes that are designed to excite the palate, including the regional flavors of Italy, Spain, and Greece. Dieters who are bored with eating a lean grilled meat with steamed vegetables will find things to eat that will change up their monotonous routine. Ozner even includes moderate consumption of wine in the plan! Instead of putting extreme restrictions on the types of foods one can eat, he emphasizes portion control and eliminates foods that contain refined sugar, white flours, and “trans” fat found in hydrogenated oils.
