Menopause Diet
The Menopause Diet is a book written in 1999 by Dr. Larrian Gillespie, a Beverly Hills urogynecologist. Gillespie’s weight loss plan is not a quick fix; rather, it is a guide to a healthier lifestyle for women approaching or in menopause. She comments that the weight gained during menopause makes women easy targets for some serious medical conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Her diet is based on the principle that when women stop producing estrogen, the production of important bodily enzymes also slows down. This affects everything from cholesterol levels to bone health.
Gillespie claims that by properly managing the diet, women can be more comfortable during menopause, feel better, have higher energy levels, and lose weight. Of particular concern to many women is the “menopausal pot-belly,” and her weight loss plan promises to help women make a difference in this area as well. In addition, her diet plan speaks to women who are concerned about the safety of hormone replacement therapy. Gillespie highly recommends making any decisions in this regard with one’s personal physician. However, she claims that many women using this diet have been able to reduce the amount of daily hormone replacements.
People using the diet say that its focus on protein and low-glycemic carbohydrates makes it similar to an Atkins or South Beach-style approach. The book includes sample menus and many recipes that complement the ones in The Goddess Diet and The Gladiator Diet, Gillespie’s other books.
